Chicago Tribune: New Year's resolutions for Chicago jazz

Embrace winter. For decades, the Jazz Institute of Chicago presented a Jazz Fair in January, the multi-faceted, multi-stage event bringing a rush of anticipation and energy to the dark, cold season. That joyous presentation no longer exists, and nothing comparable — or better — has replaced it. Which can make Chicagoans envious of the NYC Winter Jazzfest that heats up New York’s clubs in January and the forthcoming Oscar Peterson International Jazz Festival, which will light up Niagara-on-the-Lake in Ontario, Canada, come February.
