Renaissance woman Hélène Grimaud is not only a passionate pianist who performs with profound poetic expression and incomparable technical mastery. She is equally distinguished as a committed environmentalist, a compassionate human rights advocate, and an author. The intense dedication with which she devotes herself to her musical work is mirrored by the breadth and depth of her engagement with environmental protection, literature, and the arts.
Under the title “The Last Testament,” Hélène Grimaud devotes herself in the 2026/2027 season to two significant musical legacies of the piano repertoire: the final sonatas of Ludwig van Beethoven and Franz Schubert. At the heart of her solo recital program are Beethoven’s monumental Piano Sonata No. 32 in C minor, Op. 111, and Schubert’s deeply moving Piano Sonata No. 21 in B-flat major, D 960.

Born in Aix-en-Provence, Hélène Grimaud studied with Jacqueline Courtin at the local conservatory and subsequently with Pierre Barbizet in Marseille. At the age of just 13, she was accepted into the Paris Conservatoire, and in 1987 she gave her successful debut recital in Tokyo. That same year, conductor Daniel Barenboim invited her to perform with the Orchestre de Paris. This marked the beginning of Grimaud’s brilliant career, characterized by performances with leading international orchestras and renowned conductors.
Between her debut with the Berlin Philharmonic under Claudio Abbado in 1995 and her first appearance with the New York Philharmonic under Kurt Masur in 1999 — two of the many celebrated milestones of her career — Grimaud made her debut in an entirely different field: she founded the Wolf Conservation Center in Upper New York State. Her love for this endangered species began with a chance encounter with a wolf in northern Florida. “Working directly for the protection of nature and having the opportunity to return animals to their natural world is a unique experience,” explains the pianist. However, Hélène Grimaud’s commitment extends far beyond this: she is also a member of the organization “Musicians for Human Rights.”
In addition, the artist is active as a writer. To date, she has authored four books, which have been published in several languages.
Yet it is always through her thoughtful, sensitive, and expressive music-making that Hélène Grimaud reaches the emotions of her listeners. Alongside collaborations with the world’s leading orchestras, she captivates audiences with numerous recitals around the globe and performs chamber music at the highest level.

With this demanding program, Hélène Grimaud will embark on an extensive solo recital tour across leading concert halls in Europe, North and South America, and Asia, once again reaffirming her outstanding position as one of the defining pianists of our time.
Her recordings have received enthusiastic critical acclaim and numerous awards, including the Cannes Classical Recording of the Year, Choc du Monde de la musique, Diapason d’or, Grand Prix du disque, Record Academy Prize (Tokyo), Midem Classic Award, and ECHO Klassik.
Her extraordinary and pioneering contribution to the world of classical music was recognized by the French government when she was appointed a Knight of the Légion d’honneur, receiving France’s highest order of merit.
